plane mirror - flat surface, simplest mirror

light rays propagate outward in all directions from one point

many of these rays reach mirror

when rays encounter mirror, they reflected back according
to laws of reflection

appear to emerge from one point

observer sees an image, same as original object

real image - light rays passing through location of image

screen place at location, image will be visible

images projected in movie theaters

virtual image - light rays appear to diverge, do not pass
through where image is formed

system of visual perception - eyes, brain

interpret visual stimuli

cannot distinguish between object and reflection in mirror

ray tracing - determining paths light rays take in order to
determine position and size of image

ray diagram -  shows these paths

principal axis - imagine line passing at right angle to surface
of mirror/lens through its center

included in ray diagrams for curve mirrors
