Slovakian immigrants

graduated from art school at Pittsburgh's Carnegie Institute

in 1950s, drawings displayed in department stores and published

in Glamour, Vogue, other popular magazines

earned reputation for illustrations of I. Miller brand shoes

developed technique, combined drawing and printmaking

first gallery exhibition in 1952, feature illustrations for writings 

of Truman Capote

did not find broad audience for homoerotic imagery until

late 60s and 70s

in early 1960s, made paintings in response to Pop Art movement

initiated in 1950s by Richard Hamilton and Independent Group

1961 - Coca-Cola 2, earliest foray into pop art, coke glass bottle

on canvas with gestural brushstrokes on both sides, messy

Campbell's soup cans, exhibit at Ferus Gallery in LA in 1962

to very little financial success

influenced by encounter with work of Roy Lichtenstein, who used

Ben-Day dot matrix pattern in his works
